tolle, lege...tolle, lege....one hundred times.....Grace is simple not acceptable....we want the law, rules, regulations. They are intuitive and grace is counter-intuitive....we really hate grace; are afraid of sex, and can't stand freedom....we Christians I mean.....We want control, calculation and we want to feel we are better or ahead of others. We are so neurotic attempting to show a perfect performance record that comes out of our attempts that grace is an insult to my status, a hindrance to my ego, a ridiculous smash to what I know to be acceptable. Robert will shake everything you have believed so far....I read it several times and one time I read Galatians and Romans at the same time, and Robert is damn right....Grace is what we need but grace will never win in this world because 99% of true Christians will crucify you before accepting true grace....I will die reading this book over and over. Why? because I forget the force of grace everyday....and I am a self-righteous being....and I hate being such!!!...if you read it, you will cry, get angry, your heart my start to soften....and you will begin to sleep better.....now, after reading it again 2 times over I would like to add a wish, namely that it would became your favorite book; as it has become for me....I have a Masters in theology and reading is one of my addictions. I've read Lewis, Chesterton, Luther, Calvin, Pascal, et cetera ad nauseam....since I was 17....and I really dare to say: No one ever wrote a book that gets to your guts so shockingly with the gospel....and clears the webs we Christians have created for the regular people to understand Jesus and what He is about, really....so, my intent with this is to maybe get you closer to laughter out of sheer surprise......

This book was not a "casual" read for me. I found it riveting, challenging and deeply thought provoking, but I had to read it at least twice to really absorb the content. It's a book I still love to go back to and re-read parts and look over my highlights. I always knew the message of grace, but never truly GOT it and what it means to be free. I retained a compulsive "yes, but..." about things *I* surely *had* to do...or WANTED to do to retain a sense of control. As he brings the reader along on his musings and conclusions, Capon boils it all down and purifies the grace message, while leaving other biblical principles intact. He does, indeed, invoke disturbances to our sensibilities with his parables, but I can't disagree with his reasoning. He can leave nothing for us to justify about ourselves or to feel good about "our part" in our salvation, because there is nothing we can do to make ourselves more or less lovable to God or eligible for his salvation. Yet, it inspires me, in gratitude, to love the greatest Lover ever, with the best parts of me that He can empower me to offer. This book reads like several books in one, with parts like an interrupted novel, some like a coffee hour chat, some parable, and more. It's very much worth struggling through it, and do read it at least twice!

Robert Farrar Capon is a champion of God's grace, of the bedrock foundation of the Christian faith that Jesus has done everything necessary for our eternal life of bliss with Him, and we have no part (yay or nay) to play. This good, good news comes alive in "Between Noon and Three" through the story of a pair of illicit lovers who perfectly pull of their affair, who "get away" with it in a way stories with morals never allow. The parable of this affair, the symbolism of this affair, is that love pays all -- Jesus paid it all -- and there is no response we need make except to be thrilled that we have died and been raised to new life in Christ! We get away with absolutely everything, because Jesus has done absolutely everything for us. This is the Gospel as RFC tells it (and, as I believe, Jesus told it): you were born, you did some stuff, then you died and now you are alive in (and as) Christ. Doesn't matter how you live and what you do, all that matters is you died and Jesus gave you new life, His life. RFC uses a lot of big words and is a very brilliant guy, so sometimes when you read him you want your dictionary with you. But take your time, let it sink in, and you will be delighted.

Wow, this book is impressive. I've been a fan of Capon for a little while now, after first reading Hos trilogy on the parables of Jesus, and he continues to impress me. His writting style is a lot to swallow at first, but the more you read the more you understand his style, and in my case: learn to love it. Capon truly writes with the style of Lewis, and with a message we really need to hear.I would suggest that you give a little bit of grace (no pun intended) to Capon as you read. I didn't get what his point was for quite a few chapters, but once I did I found myself in awe of the beautiful grace of God, and how brilliantly portraited it is by Capon.I highly suggest this book. It's a dangerous book, and it is written to push your current doctrinal limits- but yet it is potent to radically encourage, and scandalize your heart with just how good God really is :) give it a try!

I really wanted to like this book, but I just couldn't. I understand what he was trying to say, and I agree with it, but I just couldn't put my finger on why I didn't enjoy the book. I felt it trailed off in several locations. I became very bored about halfway through it. In my opinion, I enjoyed The Mystery of Christ much better. Also, his best work is the Kingdom, Grace and Judgment parables.

Capone uses uncommon means to illustrate the amazing grace of God. The stories he tells illustrate that the key to citizenship in the acceptance of God's love.Other authors with similat viewpoints include Dallas Willard, Derrick Bonhoeffer and C. S. Lewis.
