I've loved Mary Stewart's books since I was 11 years old. I'm glad to see her books "rediscovered" by Chicago Review Press and Amazon. This Rough Magic is one of my three favorites of hers, well-written, intriguing plot, satisfying ending, and characters that keep you guessing. It had been over 50 years since I read it the first time, but the details remained with me over the years. That's the mark of an accomplished author. So many books today are forgettable by the day after we read them; it's nice to be reminded of a time when the world was slower and people interacted with people instead of electronic devices. If you haven't read a book by Mary Stewart, I believe you are missing a treat, especially if you like intelligent writing with just the right amount of description to bring the setting to life. Her books are reflective of the time in which they were written, so don't be surprised by the attitudes of the characters. Are our attitudes better today? Yes and no. There was much to be said of politeness and gallentry. I miss the courtesy of those times, so thank you, Ms. Stewart, for your thoughtful books that have passed the test of time.

Sometime in high school, I discovered Mary Stewart. I read everything she wrote and waited impatiently for her next novel. I read everything she ever published, including her children's books. On Thursday, October 12, 2017, I discovered that all of her Gothics were on sale for Kindle and in a rash moment, purchased them all.I devoured This Rough Magic and to my delight, I still love as much as I did the first time and maybe a bit more as I now have life experience and can appreciate certain nuances now that I didn't back in the day. Much of the reason I love it is not only due to a complex plot and well-developed characters, but because even her minor characters have a few details that make them memorable. Another reason is the gorgeous way she writes. Her descriptions are vivid and I feel as if I could navigate that part of Cyprus based solely on her descriptions of the geography.

A young actress vacations on Corfu, only to encounter smugglers, communist political intrigue, and murder. She tries to keep her distance, not get involved, but the blossoming friendships with the local people that develop draw her in. She also meets a famous Shakesperian actor and his musician son who are living next door and who are involved in the mystery. An exciting story with action, romance, and possible death for this intrepid heroine. Highly recommend this book.

I love Mary Stewart's novels, and this one is no exception. Yes, there is a predictable pattern that the author follows in her novels: typically, there's a plucky ingenue, a handsome and mysterious man, a dose of suspense mixed with a romantic but ominous atmosphere, and some lovely and moody settings. This novel is set on a small Greek island near the coast of Albania at a time when the Iron Curtain was still powerfully intact. There is a strong thread of menace running through the story, mixing international smuggling with the repressive political regime of Albania. Another thread relates to Shakespeare's The Tempest. There is a theory that is explored by one of the main characters that the island was the inspiration for Shakespeare's play. It's a fun possibility to play with and Stewart seems to be enjoying herself as she spins the tale out. On a subjective note, I have to disagree respectfully with the other reviewer who didn't like the interplay with The Tempest. I thought it was a light and enjoyable diversion. Equally, I can't help but love a book that features a dolphin as a recurring and important character. This is a very enjoyable reading experience if you allow yourself to go along for the ride. If you have enjoyed Mary Stewart's other offerings, I feel sure you'll find This Rough Magic to be just as much of a page-turner as her other works.

On the mysterious isle of Corfu, a young actress goes to visit her sister and meets her idol, Sir Julian, the greatest actor of his period. Unfortunately she finds his son, Max annoying and suspicious. Another rather handsome neighbor also attracts her attention. But when several drownings occur, and her beautiful dolphin is almost killed something is definitely rotten in Denmark in Shakespeare's words.I read this when I was a teenager, and am delighted that Mary Stewart's book are now in kindle. This is as good as I remembered and the suspense builds as Lucy tries to figure out who to trust. Danger, mystery, romance in a exotic setting, what more could you ask.

It's been many years since I read a Mary Stewart novel. I read the Arthurian trilogy back in the 70's, and an two other novels, all of which I loved very much. When I saw a number of her novels offered as a Kindle lightning deal, I decided to buy six that I hadn't read before. I have to say that I love her use of language and detail, which makes her stories come to life so vividly in the minds of the reader. I finished "This Rough Magic" a few weeks ago, and it certainly didn't disappoint! Stewart's writing is the kind that keeps you from wanting to put it down, even when you have other things that you need to take care of. You can't wait to get started reading again. I've read three of the six ebooks that I bought in December, and will have to read some other material so that I don't finish with the other three too soon! If her Arthurian books ("The Crystal Cave", "The Hollow Hills", "The Last Enchantment") are offered for Kindle I'll certainly jump at the chance to read those again too.

I happily read all of the books by Mary Stewart when I was younger. My mom had some of them at hand. They were always enjoyable reads. As is the case with This Rough Magic, the books always had intelligent heroines, interesting settings, mystery and romance. This one features Lucy, an out of work actress, who spends time with her sister on Corfu. There are death, accident and adventure in this story. Who is Godfrey and what is he doing on Corfu? Why is an older actor holed up there and what is his son doing on the island? With a cast of both local and visiting characters, this is a good read for those who would like a bit of escape.
