I am a father of 8 kids (6 sons, 2 daughters) and trying my best to read ahead of them to keep junk out of their heads. Wish me well.Cons: A bit heavy. Very realistic in terms of life and death. No punches are pulled here.Lots of death of emotionally important people. It's only near the end before you start feeling a good upward pull.Pros: All romance is dealt with respectably and positively. Nothing lewd.Learn a lot about nautical topics.See the benefit to working with those around you.See the benefit of not giving up.A thoughtful reader would be grateful their life was easier than this.In our house this will be limited to 13yo+ because of the emotional weight of it all. But well written, wonderful read. It is now one of my favorite books.Spoiler alert:The lifespan of the women in this book are pretty short.

This book was highly influential in my life. Ever since I read it at about age 10, I have wanted a copy. I own one now. Granted, there may be some expressions and ideas that are not politically correct now, but that is no hindrance to the overall theme of the book. Carry On, Mr. Bowditch, even when people are telling you you will never achieve your goals, even through hard work and hardship and loss of loved ones.

I read this book on the gushing recommendation of a friend. She wasn't wrong. I loved it. As i read through the story of Nat Bowditch my adjectives kept climbing higher and higher. It was magnificent. I only wish I had read this as a thirteen year boy who looked to the sea and imagined all the adventures out there. The story follows Nat Bowditch from childhood to adulthood, his gift for mathematics and navigation and his early disappointments in not making it on a ship as a crewman and his delight in finally being allowed to go on voyages across the world.I was told it is based on a true story and so I am now seeking that biography to read next. This book is a great read and one that I can't recommend enough. A classic which has stood the test of time.

My sons, 9, 11 and 13 loved hearing this book and begged for just one more chapter each time we read. They wished it wouldn't end. Nat Bodwitch was a great man and cared for the people around him - his family, friends and all seafarers who would be safer because of his contribution to navigation. He had talent but more importantly he had perseverance and brotherly love. The author did a superb job introducing us to a fine man of the past.I will be recommending it to reading families everywhere.

"It's just mathematics," Nat Bowditch said, and then he proceeded to become a scientist, a sailor, a navigator, an author and receive an honorary M.A. degreee from Harvard, after having to quit school at the age of 12. Damn fine reading. Although the book is meant for young readers, and they can get through it, any adult with a love of adventure, reading, and learning with get a lot out of it too. One can even learn to tell time from the stars, work a lunar with a sextant, and tell the difference between a privateer and a letter of marque ship, or maybe how to sail by an ash breeze (even on land). And, of course, there's a bit of the early history of the United States in there, including that little bit of trouble we had when the British stole American-born men off their ships, and when the French were our enemy on the high seas. Damn fine reading, and a bit more than mathematics.

My son is 12 and had to read this as a required book for his classical curriculum. He was hesitant to read it because he assumed classical books meant Boring! He read it in one night and couldn't wait to tell me all about it the next day. It is a wonderful story based on a real man, Nathaniel Bowditch who loved school, especially mathematics. The boy who once complained about math hasn't uttered one complaint since reading this book.

I would hazard to say that there is no Geodetic Engineer or Surveyor or even a Civil Engineer in the world, before the advent of satellites, that did not have recourse to the log tables Mr. Bowditch had meticulously prepared by hand on his voyages to Asia in the late 18th century. The science of navigation by star and lunar sightings had finally arrived. When the Manila galleon was busy plying the route to Mexico laden with spices and silk, the ship from Salem called the Astrea, and a few others, sailed to the other side of the world carrying with it the first cargoes of abaca that ever reached the east coast of the United States. Without Bowditch aboard and his genius for mathematics the navigation relying solely on dead reckoning would have been next to impossible, if not downright hazardous for any merchant to make a profit. A wonderful story about sailing ships and the courageous men that manned them during the time of sail.

My mother read this book to my brother and sister and I when I was around 6. I was enthralled. I reread it several times over the course of my childhood, and just picked it up to read again, after not reading it since my late teens. It is an absolutely wonderful book. Wonderful history, an interesting time period, and Nathaniel Bowditch was such a brilliant man who truly did change navigation and quite probably saved thousands of lives. It's definitely aimed for young readers, I'd imagine the 10-14 age group. My son at eight can easily read it, but isn't quite mature enough yet. Close, just not quite there. Judge that based on your own child!
