I love the Academy boys. This story did not disappoint in that department. Sang's interactions with all of them especially Mr. Blackbourne and Luke were great. I loved the development with those two characters. I was thrown off by the addition to the Ashley Waters story line when it comes to the counselor as well as Mr. Hendricks' involvement with her. There did not seem to be a clear path as to what was intended by that distraction. I would like to see at least one element come to completion; I don't care if it is the Ashley Waters job (nabbing Hendricks), McCoy being caught, Volto, the step-mother, or even her joining the Academy. I'm sure we are receiving bits of pieces to help put some things together, but this far into the series, the readers need more. Lastly, the editing was terrible. Not for the first time, I was able to put one of her books down without stressing to find out what comes next. Much of that stems from the fact that the flow was broken many times by poor spelling, grammar, punctuation, or even sentences dropping. She has publicly stated this is not something that concerns her, which is obvious because instead of getting better with this book, it has gotten much worse.
First off, I'll say that I thought this book was far better than The Other Side of Envy. I enjoyed Luke (although he was absent far too often considering this was his book) and that we got to see some softer moments with Mr. Blackbourne, finally. The Thanksgiving stuff was fun too.However, the editing in this book is downright horrible. If Stone paid someone to edit, then they should be fired immediately.As per usual, the timeline covered in the story is too short, so we're only on month three after nine novels. The feelings expressed and the commitments being made would seem more believable if we were talking months rather than days in each book.My biggest gripe, though, is that we're still dealing with the Ashley Waters nonsense. I'm sick of dealing with corrupt principals and wish she'd go back to the Ghost Bird/Academy storyline that the books are named for. She could do so much with those plots but instead she's selling us and herself short by instead focusing on mean high school administrators (a guidance counselor in this case).Please bring back the excitement I felt in the first couple books with the fun sleepovers and a dramatic secret society. None of the characters are enjoyable anymore since the last couple books they've all been running around separately instead of showing those awesome group dynamics from the beginning of the series. Now they can't even handle being on anything other than a one on one basis without jealousy. I understand writing dialogue with so many main characters at once is tedious, but writing pages of Sang's inner monologue can't be fun either.
Soo, I'm pretty bummed! This series started out so good. Sang and the guys had such chemistry and I enjoyed seeing them grow closer as the series carried on but now I just feel like the author is writing about a whole lot of nothing.I agree with other reviews when they said this book was anticlimactic. Seriously NOTHING happened! Nothing was answered! The plot line lost ALL steam and I feel it's because Stone is trying to draw the series out for as long as she can but honestly you're going to loose a lot of readers if you continue at this pace. We're waiting so long for these books to come out and when they do the plot is lacking and nothing is getting solved. Even some of the relationships are developing too slow.What happened to the group gatherings Sang used to have with the guys, playing video games, painting nails, getting to know each other. Now it seems like all they do is chase down vulto or some new villain that probably is irrelevant to the overall picture: Sang and the guys and the Academy! This is what we want to read about, not pages upon pages of Sang going back and forth with herself about the same thing.I really wanted to stick with this series because the first couple of books were so promising but now I'm sad to say that my attention just isn't captured anymore and I most likely will not be buying the next book. Maybe I'll wait until the last book comes out in 2025 and just read the last one when everything is finally revealed!
This is an intriguing series. I've read through all of the books and while it seems to be about a girl who makes friends and has romantic feeling for a group of teenage boys it's really about so much more than that. This is a series about the importance of kindness and how people can create kindness and protection in places when they just choose to work together. This is also a story about childhood abuse, how it feels for the children who are abused, and how they might be able to find help through community. It's about the small joys we can find in a broken life and about how important it is to listen to one another and really hear what people are telling us when they are talking and sharing. This is a series about how we can create our own utopia by choosing who we want to be our family and how we should put ourselves first. It's a series about learning to trust and how easy that is to say and how hard it is to make a reality. This maybe a book about teenagers, but the themes are universal for those of us who are working through our own issues. Is this series perfect, no, but it's wonderful if you read it for nuance and a beautiful ideal.
