Fertility Foods: 100+ Recipes to Nourish Your Body While Trying to Conceive, by Elizabeth Shaw Sara Haas

Review

"In my years in practice as a Reproductive Endocrinologist, one consistent question asked by both women and men is 'What can I (we) do to improve chances to conceive?' Although a thorough medical evaluation is essential, many patients seek opportunities where they themselves can affect positive change. Engaging in a healthy diet and lifestyle is something patients can have control over to improve fertility. Knowing what changes to make, however, is difficult, and that is where Fertility Foods comes in! Mrs. Shaw and Mrs. Haas, both registered dietitian nutritionists, present scientifically-supported information in which readers can feel confident, and they present it in a friendly and readable manner. They take the mystery out of what to eat, how to eat and most importantly, why to eat a nutrient-dense diet to optimize fertility. And as a budding foodie myself, I can attest that the recipes are delicious!"—Wendy B. Shelly, MD, FACOG, Fertility Specialists Medical Group "I wholeheartedly believe in practicing medicine with Mind, Body and Soul in mind, and I love how that Fertility Foods incorporates nutrition into making your mind, body and soul whole. This book can be for anyone looking to feel great inside and out. Easy to read and learn new concepts. Get ready to take on a yummy, nutritional, wholesome way of life." —Angelica Neison, MD, Sharp Rees-Stealy Mira Mesa"...an impressive compendium of more than 100 recipes for dishes that are unfailingly palate pleasing, appetite satisfying, and conducive to enhancing and fortifying fertility. Profusely and beautifully illustrated throughout, [...] a unique and unreservedly recommended addition to family and community library cookbook collections."—Midwest Book Review

If only the book had come out earlier in my fertility journey. As you move along this dreadful road, there is so much conflicting information. This book really cuts that down to concise evidence-based reasons certain foods will hinder or help you reach your goal, and then gives you delicious and easy recipes to help incorporate these foods. Unfortunately the book came out just days before my 4th frozen embryo transfer, so I didn't get the information that early in the game. But I used the book to distract myself while I was waiting for my results, and it really helped. I think my favorite was the carrot cake pancakes. And, low and behold, my transfer has (so far) worked and I am pregnant (hoping and praying to stay that way!). Many thanks to the authors for putting this book into the universe. I plan to buy it for all my friends still struggling to conceive, and am almost out of the phase where crackers and ginger ale is all I can hold down so want to start making the nutritious recipes again.

The authors are registered dietitian nutritionists and speak, write, and consult frequently about nutrition, food, and the role it plays in our health. In addition to their credentials, Elizabeth Shaw and Sara Haas share their personal fertility stories and their warmth, generosity, and passion for helping others optimize their fertility through food is evident on every page.In this cookbook, you'll find easy, accessible, recipes made with readily available ingredients. There is a wide range of flavor profiles and most can be adapted to particular diets or exclusions (gluten-free, vegan, dairy-free, etc.).But my favorite part? There's no deprivation and this isn't about what NOT to do. Instead, the perspective is about permission and embracing what is good for you, nourishing for your body, and will enhance and support your fertility. The basis of the well-rounded dietary guidelines is the USDA's My Plate, but Fertility Foods Cookbook goes a step beyond to include the facts behind which foods will most support your fertility as well as portion guidelines and corresponding recipes so you can start with ingredients you may have on hand already - or that you particularly love. They also provide a list of other nutrients to include in your fertility-friendly diet along with recipes. Each recipe has a Fertility Focus note and nutrition facts. One of my favorite parts, is at the beginning of each section, there's a chart of quick staple foods within that category (breakfast, snack, entrees, etc.) along with a suggested, simple, fertility addition or swap. The recipes are quick, easy to follow, and work together to build on each other. You could easily do a week's worth of meals from this cookbook alone - but still feel there was variety, abundance, and pleasure in your food.

Are you ready to overhaul your pantry with fertility-focused foods? Look no further than the Fertility Foods Cookbook! Shaw and Haas know first hand how important nutrition is for reproductive health and show you just how simple it can be to take control of the one area of your life that may seem so out of control during this time, your nutrition. Fertility Foods Cookbook is packed with colorful photos, simple recipes, and overflowing with fertility research. As a dietitian who has struggled for years to conceive I admire these dietitians coming forward, sharing their struggles, and leading the way to create positive change!

This has quickly become my favorite cookbook. The beginning has tips for general nutrition — specifically what is important for fertility. Don’t skip this part! This book is about eating nutritiously overall, not just about giving you recipes to try. There are plenty of recipes though! I counted 110 recipes (some are for salad dressings and sauces). These recipes usually have variations to them as well, so it feels like there are even more. My favorites are the spinach & mushroom frittata, the turkey meatballs, and the parmesan pesto pasta. There are even dessert recipes with less refined sugars for when you crave something sweet (the chocolate chip cookies are delicious!).I plan to use this cookbook long after our fertility journey is over. It has changed our philosophy on eating in general, and it has helped us significantly reduce refined sugars relatively painlessly.(written by Craig’s girlfriend)

I received my book two days ago and already have so many recipes I want to try! This is an excellent book because it has so many healthy fertility recipes and beautiful pictures for each. The pictures in this book will help me decide what to make and allow me to get a clear idea of what I am in for. Beautiful encouragement to eat right! This book dives into fertility nutrition but in a clear, not overwhelming way. It is so detailed and full of so much excellent information, and is easy to understand... Not dense and dry.I am not pregnant or trying at this point, but this book is going to be a permanent resource in my kitchen. With so many healthy, fulfilling recipes in here, this is great for everyone. It covers everything from light food to comfort food.I purchased this book because I wanted healthy recipes for me and my family. And I got it. I can continue to lay the healthy food foundation my family needs.
